The Black Isle. It may not sound like it, but it's one of the brightest holiday destinations in Scotland, alive with possibilities for a great time.

In the Highlands of Scotland, a few miles north of Inverness, you’ll find the Black Isle.

It isn’t really an island – but it is almost completely surrounded by water, ringed by the Moray, Cromarty and Beauly Firths. It isn’t really that black, either. While nobody’s completely sure about the name, it might be because we have such rich, dark soil here (though some think it’s because people used to practice witchcraft here, hundreds of years ago).

The Isle itself is around 23 miles long and 9 miles wide – and, with a landscape that stretches from rocky peaks and rolling hills down to shallow bays and wide beaches (with forest and farmland in between), it’s like a Scotland in miniature.

Flowerburn is on the eastern side of the isle, 16 miles from Inverness and about 2 miles from the seaside village of Rosemarkie.
